Gym membership cost: real prices, hidden fees and Austin data

By the FindTheGym research team · Updated October 1, 2026 · 10 min read

The typical U.S. gym member pays $38 a month, the 2024 median reported by the Health & Fitness Association, while the average is $69. Planet Fitness starts at $15, the Greater Austin YMCA charges an adult $75, and Life Time in Austin starts at $219. Fees can add over $100 to your first year.

That spread is the whole problem with asking what a gym costs. A $15 membership and a $219 membership are different products, and the price you'll pay depends far more on the type of gym than on the city or the brand.

Gym membership cost by type of gym

Gym membership cost falls into rough bands by the kind of facility. These are prices posted on official sites or filings that we checked in October 2026. Chain prices vary by location, so treat these as examples rather than national prices.

Type Example Published price What the price gets you
Budget chain Planet Fitness Classic Card from $15/month One location, machines and free small-group instruction
Budget chain, upgraded PF Black Card $24.99/month Every Planet Fitness club, a guest on each visit
Community / nonprofit Greater Austin YMCA, adult $75/month ($49 ages 19 to 26) No long-term contract, 30 days' notice to cancel
Luxury club Life Time Austin North from $219/month Pools, a spa, courts, classes and child care
Boutique class studio Ballet Austin Pilates, group reformer $44 a class, $450 for a month unlimited Small reformer classes
CrossFit Strive Athletics (Austin) $195/month unlimited Unlimited CrossFit classes
CrossFit FitHub CrossFit REP (Austin) $149 (up to 9 sessions) to $219 (unlimited) Coached classes
Climbing Bouldering Project Austin $95/month regular rate, $25 day pass Climbing and classes
Yoga drop-in Black Swan Yoga $15 suggested donation per class, $98/month Unlimited reservations on a membership

The jump from budget to everything else is enormous. The Austin YMCA costs five times a Planet Fitness Classic Card, and every boutique studio, CrossFit box and climbing gym in the table charges $95 a month or more for regular access. At those places you're paying for a coach, a capped class or a climbing wall, and the treadmills are an afterthought.

The Health & Fitness Association's numbers line up with that split. In 2023, almost 67% of U.S. fitness facility members paid less than $50 a month, and facilities charging $100 or more grew their membership by 7.9% from 2022 to 2023. That's why the average sits so far above the median. Most members pay budget prices, and a smaller group paying $100 or more drags the average up. The median is moving too. Athletech News reported it had sat at $30 for most of the past decade before the 2024 jump, and HFA vice president of research Anton Severin told the outlet that "even in volatile times, people continue to prioritize habits that help them feel better and stay grounded."

If you want to compare more Austin options by type, we keep separate lists for CrossFit, climbing, yoga and Pilates studios, and for the big chains on our brands page.

The fees that don't show up in the monthly price

The monthly number is what gyms advertise. Three other charges decide what you really pay in year one.

Enrollment or activation fees

Most gyms charge something to start. Planet Fitness's 2025 annual report lists enrollment fees of $0 to $59. Bouldering Project Austin adds a $55 activation fee to its monthly membership but charges none on its annual plan. The Greater Austin YMCA normally charges a $49 join fee and was waiving it as a limited-time offer when we checked. Before paying an enrollment fee, ask whether a promotion like the YMCA's is coming up.

Annual fees

This one is easy to miss because it isn't part of the monthly price. Planet Fitness lists a standard annual fee of $49 on top of monthly dues for both its Classic and Black Card memberships. Run the math on a Classic Card: $15 times 12 months is $180, plus the $49 annual fee is $229, and up to $288 if your club charges the full $59 to enroll. That works out to $19 to $24 a month, which is still cheap, but it isn't $15.

Cancellation terms

Quitting costs money too. The Greater Austin YMCA and FitHub CrossFit REP both ask for 30 days' notice before your next billing date, which can mean one more month of dues after you decide to quit. Black Swan Yoga's no-commitment single month carries no refunds. Studios also charge for missed classes: Ballet Austin Pilates charges a $20 fee for late cancellations inside 12 hours on its unlimited plan.

Federal rules won't help much. The FTC's "click-to-cancel" rule, which would have required cancellation to be as easy as signing up, was vacated by the Eighth Circuit Court of Appeals on July 8, 2025, days before it was due to take full effect. In Texas, state law gives you until midnight of the third business day after signing a health spa contract to cancel for a full refund, under Texas Occupations Code section 702.307. The statute says to send written notice with proof of payment by certified mail, and the gym has 30 days to refund you. After that window, the contract's own terms apply, so read them before you sign.

Day passes vs a monthly membership

A day pass makes more sense than a membership if you'll visit fewer than about four times a month at the gyms below. The break-even point is the monthly price divided by the day pass price:

  1. Life Time Austin South sells a day pass for $60. Against the $219 Austin North starting rate, membership wins at four visits a month ($219 divided by $60 is 3.65). Life Time also applies the day pass fee to your first month's dues if you join.
  2. Bouldering Project Austin charges $25 for an adult day pass and $95 a month at the regular rate, so membership pays off at the fourth visit. Its 10-visit punch pass costs $200, or $20 a visit, with no expiration date.
  3. FitHub CrossFit REP charges $25 for a drop-in and credits it toward your first month if you join within 30 days.

I'd buy a membership at a climbing gym or CrossFit box only after a month of paying per visit. If what you spent on visits passed the monthly price, sign up. If you went twice, you've learned something about yourself for $50.

In Austin, the median day pass is $25 across the gyms in our count that offer one. Our Austin day pass list shows which gyms sell them and for how much.

How to pay less for a gym membership

Pay for the year up front if you're sure. Bouldering Project Austin's annual adult membership is $950 with no activation fee. Twelve months at the regular $95 rate is $1,140, plus the $55 activation fee, so prepaying saves $245 in year one. The risk is real, though: if you stop going in March, that money is gone.

Use the age and income discounts. The Greater Austin YMCA charges $49 a month for adults 19 to 26 instead of $75, and its Membership For All program sets dues on an income-based sliding scale when you verify income with your most recent 1040.

Take every free trial before you commit. Strive Athletics offers a free trial session, Club Pilates offers a free 30-minute intro class, and 164 Austin gyms in our count advertise some kind of free trial. Our free trial list collects them.

Match the gym to what you'll really do. If you mostly lift and run on a treadmill, a budget gym covers it. Paying luxury club prices for a pool you won't swim in is, I think, the easiest way to overspend on a gym. If you only go to classes, compare a class pack against an unlimited plan: at Ballet Austin Pilates, a 10-class pack works out to $35.80 a class, while the $450 unlimited month only beats it once you take 13 classes.

Check for promotions before you sign. Bouldering Project Austin was running its adult monthly membership at $69 instead of $95 when we checked, with the condition that you keep the membership for one month after the promo ends.

How much is a gym membership in Austin?

The median monthly price among Austin gyms with a price we could record is $80, according to FindTheGym's October 2026 count of 736 gyms in the city of Austin. Only 145 of those 736 gyms, about 19.7%, have a monthly price we could record from their own website or a verified chain price, and 72.6% of the 645 gym websites we crawled showed no prices at all. The cheapest monthly price we found was $9.99.

I don't read that median as proof that Austin is uniquely expensive. Our count leans heavily toward boutique studios: 465 of the 736 gyms are boutique-tier, compared with 22 budget gyms. My guess is that studios post prices more often than big-box gyms do, which would push the median up. Treat it as what a published Austin price looks like, and expect a budget chain to beat it easily.

Neighborhood matters a lot. Among gyms with a recorded price, the median is $50 downtown, $59 in Central Austin and $79.50 in South Austin. East Austin's median is $99.50 and West Austin's is $120.

Other numbers from the count:

  • 216 Austin gyms offer a day pass.
  • 164 gyms advertise a free trial.
  • 39 gyms are open 24 hours.

Frequently asked questions

Is $50 a month a lot for a gym membership?

It's above the typical price. The Health & Fitness Association reported a 2024 U.S. median of $38 a month, and in 2023 about two thirds of members paid under $50. At a full community gym like the Greater Austin YMCA, where an adult pays $75, $50 would be a bargain.

What is the average gym membership cost per month?

$69 a month in 2024, according to the Health & Fitness Association, up from $65 in 2023. The median is much lower, because most members pay budget prices.

Is Planet Fitness really $15 a month?

The Classic Card starts at $15 a month for new members, according to Planet Fitness's 2025 annual report, but there's also a standard $49 annual fee and an enrollment fee of $0 to $59. Counting both, a first year costs $229 to $288. The Black Card is $24.99 a month and works at every Planet Fitness location.

How much does a gym day pass cost?

In the examples we checked, from a $15 suggested donation at Black Swan Yoga to $60 at Life Time. In Austin, the median day pass in our count is $25. Bouldering Project Austin charges $25 for an adult.

Can I cancel a gym membership in Texas?

Yes, within limits. Texas law lets you cancel a health spa contract for a full refund until midnight of the third business day after signing, by sending written notice and proof of payment by certified mail. After that, the gym's contract decides, and many require 30 days' notice before the next billing date. There's no federal click-to-cancel rule in effect, since a court vacated the FTC's version in July 2025.

Is an annual gym membership cheaper than paying monthly?

Often, yes. At Bouldering Project Austin, the $950 adult annual plan saves $245 compared with a year of monthly payments at the regular rate plus the activation fee. Only prepay if you went consistently for at least a month or two first.

How much is a gym membership in Austin?

Among Austin gyms with a price we could record, the median is $80 a month, with the cheapest at $9.99. Most Austin gyms don't post prices, so call or use a free trial to get a quote.

Why do boutique studios cost so much more than gyms?

You're paying for an instructor and a capped class. A group reformer class at Ballet Austin Pilates costs $44, about three times a whole month at Planet Fitness, because one instructor is teaching a small room of reformer machines.
